This is literally the BEST way to use your leftover sugar cookies, even if they’re iced! If you are using iced cookies, you might need to reduce the amount of cream cheese you use. Either way, it doesn’t matter these small balls are sent straight from heaven for us to enjoy!
If you don’t have extra sugar cookies, bake some from scratch! For an easier route buy store-bought cookie dough or straight-up sugar cookies from your nearest retailer. But if you have a recipe you love, go for it! The truffles will taste even yummier!
I don’t know about you, but around the holidays every year, I love making sugar cookies, cake and biscuit truffles, fudge and just about any other sweet treat! Combine the two best treats in this list i.e., sugar cookies and truffles and you have the ultimate holiday dessert!
Our sugar cookie truffles are made with hand-crushed homemade (or store brought) sugar cookies, cream cheese and vanilla. They are then dipped and coated in chocolate and have sprinkles added to the top to add that festive touch. They are a huge crowd pleaser and vanish in an instant!
Ingredients (screenshot for grocery list!)
Sugar cookies: Make sure to use hard (not soft) sugar cookies. Now you can use either store brought ones, my personal preference is the Pepperidge Farm ones, because they have the right texture, but I’ve also used homemade sugar cookies, a few days old (still hard)
You definitely don’t want to use burnt sugar cookies, DON’T USE fresh out of the oven cookies, they won’t crumble in the blender or food processor. It will create a bigger mess.
Cream cheese: Make sure you use softened cream cheese. I let mine sit out on the counter for about 30 minutes to an hour before getting started.
Vanilla: The boost of vanilla flavor pairs perfectly with the sweetness from the sugar cookies and tang from the cream cheese. This is essential and you can use the Simply Organic Vanilla Extract.
Chocolate: It’s important to use high-quality chocolate ONLY. Read on to know which brands I prefer and why! I don’t prefer melting down white chocolate chips for these. It never seems to have that super smooth consistency that the truffles need.
Here’s a sum-up of all the ingredients needed:
- 15 sugar cookies (Pepperidge Farm)
- 2-3 ounces of cream cheese (softened)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (Simply Organic Vanilla Extract.)
- 1 1/2 cups chocolate melting wafers
How to Make Sugar Cookie Truffles
BLEND IT ALL: The first step, blending the cookies in a blender or food processor. It’s the easiest step and the least messy!
You want them to turn into SUPER FINE crumbs. Add the cream cheese and vanilla and mix it with short interval breaks until the mixture is combined.
ROLL IT OUT: Next step, scoop out the mixture with a small cookie scoop or spoon and roll into balls. Call in the kids at this point and have a blast.
Place the balls on a parchment-lined baking tray and freeze until firm (usually takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on your freezer).
DIP IT IN: Finally, melt the chocolate until smooth. Then place the truffle on a fork and dip into the bowl of melted chocolate.
Tap, TAP, and Tap the fork on the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate (this ensures that none drips down). Then place on the baking sheet and immediately add sprinkles or any other toppings you prefer!
Do this while the chocolate is still wet. Work fast they harden SUPER quickly!
These Are Some Tips for the Best Outcomes For Your Truffles
You can add jimmies as well; they’re my personal favorites if I compare them with sprinkles. Be creative with it, add some sanding sugar, some crushed peppermint or drizzle some chocolate on top!
We want them Smooth!
Be sure to dip the truffles into the chocolate as fast as you can, this will prevent an extra layer from adding on the first layer.
Next, gently tap the truffle on the edge of the chocolate bowl to remove any excess chocolate (Use a fork for help). Place them on a butter paper and clean the splatters with a toothpick to prevent it from hardening the way it is.
How to Store Excess Truffles?
That’s simple! FREEZE IT. To freeze, put the truffles in a plastic zipper bag or you could use a container as well. Place them inside the freezer and freeze them without any doubt.
You will have good truffles for about 2-3 months. Thaw them in the fridge for 2-3 hours or enjoy them frozen.
I usually place my truffles onto a baking sheet and I flash freeze them for around 30 minutes to prevent them from sticking. Like I said can be frozen for up to 3 months!
Here Are Some Variations For This Truffle Recipe
When it comes to truffles, the only variations that you can go for are mainly the variations of cookies used. And luckily, there are a lot of cookies that we can work with.
Oreos are my personal favorites as they have that balance of chocolate and sweet vanilla cream that goes well with the amazing with that dark biscuit. Crush up some Oreos and follow my recipe as it is! IT’S THAT SIMPLE!
Who doesn’t like coconut cookies? Well, I sure love them! Tiny chunks of finely grated coconut infused in a rich sweet biscuit, that’s just lovely.
You can use absolutely any flavor of wafers, be it chocolate, vanilla, orange or even lemon.
Toppings To Choose From
You can get creative with truffles as a lot of toppings can suit them. I looked up a few on the internet and tried them out, and I actually loved them!
Who would want to coat their rich chocolate truffles with matcha tea? Well, I tried it and it was a great experience! Coating the truffles with this gives them a refreshing herbal tea flavor that does not taste bad, believe me, I was surprised!
Chocolate and peppermint are a match made in heaven! It’s just the perfect combination because rolling your yummy chocolate truffles into some finely crushed peppermint candies is the perfect way to get that chocolate minty flavour that almost everyone loves.
Pecans can go with almost everything; they have an earthy and rich flavor that balances out the sweetness of whatever desserts you make. Finely chop some pecans, and roll your truffles over it. The buttery rich earthy taste will enhance the flavors of your truffles!
Are you a coffee lover? I sure am, and I love rolling my truffles into some espresso to give me that strong coffee kick with that amazingly sweet flavor of the truffles.
Again, coconut can go with almost everything! Finely chopped toasted coconut adds a tropical sweetness to your chocolaty truffles and enriches them with its flavor.
Get some cinnamon sugar and roll your truffles into it, be sure not to use too much as cinnamon can be overpowering and might ruin the taste of your truffles.
I usually use jimmies because I prefer their taste and their texture so roll your truffles into those jimmies and enjoy!
